This is a note for future me. Just some reminders and encouragement for when things are going well or for when things aren't so great. I got this!
I'm writing this in January of 2022, just three weeks into the Develop Carolina fellowship program and not even two years after I started learning how to code. Things are going pretty well, I think! A quick recap of what I've accomplished so far:
Taught myself HTML, CSS, and JavaScript while working full-time, during a global pandemic, completing over 5 certifications.
Built my first website from scratch, twice. I got some good feedback on my first attempt, didn't get discouraged, and I built something that was 10x better.
Quit my job to dedicate myself to this new path without any job prospects, and trust myself to make it work.
Built relationships with SC Codes mentors that helped me prepare for the application procress.
I got an interview with Code/+/Trust from my first job application, which led to an internship that I started only three weeks after applying.
I was accepted into the Develop Carolina program even though I initially turned down the opportunity.
I got to meet with Citibot after applying. They couldn't offer a position, but they wanted to share where they were with their product and get my feedback. The door was opened for future opportunities, but at the very least, was a great experience and awesome connection to make.
After only four weeks with Code/+/Trust, I have been able to learn enough to write React and Material UI, and also have experience with Cypress. And I haven't used GitHub desktop at all! Getting better with command line.
I was asked to join a team to build an app call Rudi that was dreamed up by a fellow Code/+/Trust intern, Jordan. We have already have a name, logo, some comps, and support from potential users.
I have been working with my first ever freelance client, Hannah Burke, to build her website after three different people referred her to me (before I had even built my own website!). Hannah is amazing and has offered to potentially partner up in the future and send more business my way.
I have been approached by another potential freelance client that was also referred to me before I have even advertised my services, and the person that made the referral has let me know they will be sending more my way!
I started this blog!
I've completed two weeks worth of exercises for Develop Carolina, have met with my new mentor, and have started to plan out my umbrella project.
That's probably not even everything, and obviously it hasn't all been rainbows and butterflies. There have been many moments of doubt and frustration, a few sleepless nights, and sometimes even fear. But I pushed through all of those and always came out better on the other side. I have felt a real excitement and joy through all the moments, good and bad.
I know this is where I'm supposed to be. I know the risk is worth the reward. I know I am capable of learning the skills I will need to be successful. I know that failure and setbacks are where growth happens. Most importantly, I know I'm not in this alone!
There's no telling where I'll be a year from now, and that's super exciting. Gotta keep up the good work!
